Q1. Clara.io is a 3D modeler available online. How can it be possible to executing such a program in a simple web browser?

I should start by saying that http://Clara.io is actually more than just a modeller.  Clara.io already supports creating UV maps, textures, materials, bone systems (creation and import), skinning, and keyframe animations.  Clara.io also supports the publishing of 3D models using our player and with our forthcoming V-Ray integration, it is also a rendering platform.

Q2. About polygon editing, what is the limits in terms of number of triangles ? Does Clare.io offer a productive interface with shortcuts, undo / redo, repeat actions...

Clara.io works best right now up to 300K polygons right now, but we have a plan that will increase this to around 3M in the next few months.

Clara.io already supports undo and redo along with more than 50 shortcut keys.  Most shortcut keys are listed in their corresponding menu items, but they are also listed in our online documentation.  We should have support for “repeat actions” soon!


Q3. Is Clara.io easy to learn for 3D artists comming from various packages?

Clara.io similar in design to 3DS Max, Maya, and Softimage.  Thus if you are coming from these packages it should be pretty simple to learn.  It most similar to 3DS Max in terms of modelling.


Q3. What are the main sub-object functions available?

There is a lot of functions these days.

For objects, we support Transform (translate, rotate, scale), Merge, Collapse, Symmetry, Mirror, Slice, Cut, Twist, Taper, Mesh Smooth, Detact All Faces, Triangulate, Remove Used Vertices, Flip Normals, Edit Normals, UV Map, Vertex Color Channel, Uniform Vertex Colors, Group, Ungroup, Delete.

For faces, we support Transform (translate, rotate, scale), Extrude, Bevel, Insert, Slice Plan, Cut Plane, Detact, Duplicate, Flip and Delete.

For edges, we support Transform (translate, rotate, scale), Loop Select, Ring Select, Border Select, All Borders, Fill Borders, Connect, Remove and Delete.

For vertices, we support Transform (translate, rotate, scale), Weld, Connect, Duplicate, Remove Unused Vertices, Remove, Delete.

If you hold down shift when switching between face, edge, and vertex modes, your selection will be converted automatically.

If you need anything else, just suggest it and we can implement it pretty quickly.


Q4 . In the field of animation, is it possible to create characters with complex rigs?

Right now we support bone systems with skinning.  We do not yet support rigs yet, but it is coming.


Q5 . What are the 3D formats available for transferring data to another DCC ( Maya, 3ds max ...)?

We support a lot of formats, but the best formats for transferring data are FBX, Collada and OBJ/MTL.  We also support Blend (for Blender), ThreeJS (for interactive WebGL applications), STL (for 3D printing), PLY and 20 other formats.  We are adding new formats all the time.  We will have support for glTF (for fast WebGL viewing) and Babylon.js (a new WebGL game engine) formats soon.


Q6 . Will 3D data be saved in the cloud ?

Yes, all data is stored in the cloud.  No data is stored locally.


Q7 . From a security point of view , do you think companies are ready for such tools?

Companies are already using DropBox, Google Documents/Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive/Office 365.  Thus many people are ready.  We have to build this tool now, and eventually most everyone people will be ready for it.


Q8 . Exocortex is well-known for Maya / Softimage plugins (Fury, Momentum...). What is the link between this activities and Clara.io? Does it inspire the development of Clara.io?

We built Clara.io to fix the problems in the industry that we all deal with every day.  I’ve been dealing with the problems in the industry since I created Frantic Films Software and co-created Deadline and Krakatoa back in 2003-2005.  I hate the long startup times of Softimage, the 3GB installer required for 3DS Max, the many service packs of Maya, the need to purchase render farms, complex plugin configurations (most of our support calls at Exocortex are related to installation and licensing), the need to set-up file servers and backup systems to manage your data, the difficulty of collaborating with others, and also the high cost of desktop-based 3D software.  Clara.io fixes these issues.  Clara.io just works, it is always up to date, collaboration is instant, it works on any WebGL compatible device (desktop, laptop, tablet, and phone), rendering is always a click away, and there is no configuration.


Q9. Will it be possible to create photorealistic images/video with Clara?

Q10. Will it be possble to create game assets with Clara.io?

Yes, it is perfect for making game assets including both static assets and characters.  We will be improving our rigging tools to make it even better.  Clara.io’s great support for FBX is perfect for sharing data with Unity 3D.


Q9 . What is the main target user of Clara.io? When will it be available (current beta)?

Our target users are existing Maya, 3DS Max, Softimage and Blender users.  We are a multi-function tool, thus our target market is somewhat broad.  Our target users are artists creating game content, creating interactive 3D web applications, and those interesting in rendering their work using the power of V-Ray on the cloud.  We have tools for embedding your 3D models and animations in your web pages, and portfolios.  We are also adding 3D printing tools in the next few months as well in response to requests from our users.
